Current Events assignments due Mar 23

This is a reminder about the assignments for Current Events class, due Mar 23.

1.  Read chapter 5 of Understanding Power, by Noam Chomsky.  (There is some unpleasant stuff near the beginning of the chapter.  If you feel like skipping ahead, it is much safer after you get to the section on Cuba)

There were some really good points in chapter 3, which we discussed in the lower class last week, and will hopefully have time to discuss next week in the upper class.

2.  Create a blog post about some interesting news event.

The blog post can be an opinion style post, or a fact-checking post, or one of the other styles we discussed the lower class.  We discussed research style, where you combine information for several sources to point out something, and predictive style, where you try to predict what may happen in the future in a situation.  Another good one is a principle-based post, where you analyze the situation based on fundamental principle and possible state what should happen as the best possible outcome.

And not to neglect reporting on our upper class discussions, we heard about the recent Utah legislative session from several students who had done weekly internships at the capital.  And we had an interesting discussing about targeted killing, otherwise known as assassination.
